A flatlander from southern Indiana, Walter Glover, while in his 50s, became fascinated by elite climbers who scaled the world’s highest mountains. One day he heard a voice say, “You know, you could do that.”

After months of training, an unlikely odyssey began for this senior citizen, journalist, and hospital pastoral care chaplain. He undertook to climb the Seven Summits while raising money to fight America’s epidemic pediatric health issue—youth obesity.

Mount Everest and Mount Kilimanjaro is filled with descriptions of the stark beauty, weather, and elements surrounding the world’s most famous mountains—and the creative forces that produced them. Vivid accounts of altitude sickness and a brush with cerebral edema add to the suspense. As Glover chronicles his interactions with guides and fellow climbers, we meet fascinating people, including Godlisten, the extraordinary guide on Mt. Kilimanjaro featured on the book cover with the author.

Glover’s treks raised more than $130,000 for programs to combat youth obesity. The Seven Mountain Story series and Walter’s quest will energize people of all ages to become more active, increase their capacity to dream, and then train to realize those dreams.

A very well written book that was a real page turner. Whether you want to hike a nearby mountain or one the highest peaks or you enjoy hearing another's experiences hiking and interacting with others, you will love this book.

Usually when one reads a book or watches a movie about mountain climbing there is a lot of recounting of swagger and "macho-ness." Mr. Glover gives you the average person's impression of what it is like to climb two of the highest mountains. I liked experiencing the high altitude thin air and how to prepare for it and hearing about what its like to go a month without seeing an auto or hearing a car horn!

It was also great to hear small stories about his family back home and about his Italian mother, father and and aunts. They were and are an incredible crew! Its also very refreshing to know that the proceeds from this book and his activities go towards fighting childhood obesity.

Mr. Glover has a nice easy to read style of writing that is very direct, enjoyable and interesting to read. I highly recommend this book to all readers!!

Mount Everest and Mount Kilimanjaro Seven Mountain Story Book I eBook Walter Glover Reviews

A very interesting read. The detail he provides on the weather, the vegetation, the terrain and the people make it easy to feel you're walking along with him. Looking forward to his next installment.
Walter's book is great read -- his determination, but more important, his faith and spirituality, really comes through as real and authentic. He had a dream and the dream came to fruition. He is to be admired for his dedication, his training, his doggedness through the tough days of the journeys, and particularly for raising funds to fight youth obesity.
Walter tells of his mountain climbing experiences at Mounts Everest and Kilimanjaro from the perspective, not of a professional climber caught up in the technical aspects, but rather as a man of faith engaged in both a physical and spiritual journey. This book is very comfortable to read, as though Walter were sitting in your living room, having a personal conversation with you. Readers will find it hard to put the book down, his journey pushing you ever forward. Especially beautiful and insightful is his recognition of the pervading presence of God both in nature and in the people he meets along the way. A wonderful book for the individual reader, but one which easily could be used in a group discussion setting.
Kind of a rambling book. Interesting, but if you are not religious, or don't like Indiana or Ohio, it will be difficult to read. He talks about religion every page, virtually every paragraph. In fact, I would say this book is more about his religion than mountain climbing. That said, if you can get past that, it is a good account of trekking to Everest Base Camp on the south side and Kilimanjaro on the Machame route.
Walter does a great job of sharing the experience of mountain climbing while at the same time relating the journey to his overall mission.

I enjoyed reading this book because it is told from a non-professional mountain climber point of view. When I read this book I was preparing for my own trek on the Machame route - Kilimanjaro.

The book covered many areas that other books and websites leave out. I was inspired by Walter’s willpower to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro, and this helped me reach the summit earlier this month.

Thanks again to Walter and I look forward to reading his next book.
Loved the book! Wally writes as if he is talking to you. I felt like I was climbing the mountain with him. Humor and spirituality intertwined. I was chuckling along the way. Now I'm waiting for his next book. Make sure you read this one!

This book tells of the courage and preparedness required at any age for climbing a mountain. But the author has much more in store for the reader the warmth of a real person attempting something very challenging, the telling of an experience as much spiritual as physical, all with a healthy dose of self-deprecating humor. This book is the kind of read that makes you feel like you are there during the climbs, the encounters, the nights, the weather, and much more. I'm glad Walter has climbed additional mountains and am anticipating the next book.
